Japan’s Bank Holidays: Will Your Salary, Rent Payment or ATM Withdrawal Be Delayed?
A bank holiday in Japan does not automatically stop bank transfers or ATM withdrawals. Bank counters usually close, but many ordinary domestic transfers can still arrive the same day. Salary payments, scheduled transfers and cash withdrawals follow different rules, so an open banking app does not guarantee that every service is working.
For foreign residents, the practical issue is timing: will your salary be available before rent is due, and can you access money during a long holiday? Check the actual payment date and service notice before relying on either.
This guide is for workers, students and families using Japanese bank accounts. Information was checked on October 8, 2026; specific holiday maintenance notices and fees can change.
- Bank counters: generally closed on weekends, national holidays and December 31–January 3.
- Ordinary domestic transfers: may arrive immediately during holidays, depending on both banks, the account and the service used.
- Salary payments: do not automatically follow the same rules as instant personal transfers.
- ATMs: may remain open, but your card’s service hours, fees and maintenance restrictions still apply.
Which days count as bank holidays?
The main closure calendar combines weekends, national holidays and the special year-end period of December 31–January 3.
The Bank of Japan’s official holiday schedule lists these closures for its Japanese offices. It is a useful calendar reference, although your commercial bank’s branch and service notices determine what you can actually use.
December 31 and January 2–3 matter particularly. They are part of the banking closure period even though they are not all national holidays. A calendar showing only public holidays can therefore give you the wrong impression about counter services.
Useful Japanese terms include:
- 銀行休業日 — ginkō kyūgyōbi: bank holiday or bank non-business day.
- 営業日 — eigyōbi: business day.
- 翌営業日 — yoku eigyōbi: next business day.
- 前営業日 — zen eigyōbi: previous business day.
When a bank says “next business day,” it does not necessarily mean tomorrow. A weekend followed by a Monday holiday pushes that date to Tuesday.
Dates to plan around in late 2026
The official calendar and the placement of weekends give these practical planning examples:
- October 10–12: Saturday, Sunday and the Monday national holiday form a three-day counter closure. The next usual banking business day is Tuesday, October 13.
- November 21–23: another Saturday-to-Monday closure, with the next usual business day on Tuesday, November 24.
- December 31, 2026–January 3, 2027: the standard four-day year-end closure. The next usual business day is Monday, January 4.
These are counter-calendar examples, not predictions that all digital services will stop for those entire periods.
Can a transfer arrive on a holiday?
An ordinary domestic transfer can arrive on a holiday, but immediate receipt depends on the service conditions at both ends.
Japan’s bank-transfer network includes a weekday daytime system and the More Time System, which supports transfers at night, on weekends and on holidays. The latter began operating in October 2018. This is why the old assumption that every transfer after 3 p.m. waits until the next banking day is no longer reliable. Zengin-Net explains how the two systems work.
The network’s extended hours do not make every bank product available around the clock. You must still distinguish an immediate transfer from a booking for a later date.
“Accepted” and “received” are different stages
A transfer instruction can be accepted while the recipient’s credit is scheduled for a later business day. Look for the execution date and transaction status, rather than treating a confirmation screen as proof of receipt.
For a concrete example, MUFG’s personal online-transfer page distinguishes customers with and without its instant-transfer registration. Without registration, transfers to other banks accepted after 3 p.m. on weekdays, or on weekends and holidays, are handled on the next business day. With registration, same-day credit is generally available, subject to the receiving bank and account conditions.
MUFG also states that funds and fees can be deducted when an instruction is accepted even if the transfer is being handled on the next business day. Money leaving your balance does not, by itself, prove that the recipient has received it.
This example is specific to MUFG. Other banks have their own settings, service hours and restrictions.
Why a holiday transfer may still wait
Check these possibilities before assuming something has gone wrong:
- The sending service is outside its available hours or under maintenance.
- The receiving bank or account cannot accept immediate credit at that time.
- The instruction is a scheduled transfer rather than an immediate one.
- The payment uses a corporate bulk or salary-transfer service with separate processing rules.
MUFG explicitly excludes bulk and salary transfers from its ordinary instant-transfer service. Its 24-hour transfer information also identifies maintenance periods and receiving-account exceptions.
Key point: Branch opening hours, app availability and the recipient’s credit date are three different things. For a deadline, confirm the credit date.
Will your salary be paid early or late?
Your employer’s payroll calendar determines the adjusted payday; your bank’s holiday transfer capability cannot answer that question on its own.
If your usual payday falls on a bank holiday, check your employment documents, work rules or payroll notice for the holiday adjustment. Ask HR whether payment moves to the previous or next banking business day. Do not assume every employer uses the same arrangement.
This matters because salary transfers are often submitted through a separate corporate service. An employer’s ability to send an ordinary instant transfer does not mean its payroll batch will be processed the same way.
What to ask payroll before a long weekend
Ask for the actual credited payday, rather than only the usual monthly date:
- “What date will this month’s salary be credited?”
- “If payday falls on a bank holiday, do you use the previous or next business day?”
- “Has the holiday-adjusted date been reflected in the payroll schedule?”
For example, if your normal payday is the 25th and that date falls on a Sunday, the two arrangements have different consequences: a previous-business-day policy could mean Friday, while a next-business-day policy could mean Monday, or later if Monday is also a holiday. These are illustrations, not a nationwide payroll rule.
Why the employer needs advance notice
Corporate salary-transfer services have submission deadlines measured in business days. A holiday therefore affects not just the payday but also the employer’s preparation time.
For example, SMBC’s business-service FAQ gives a previous-business-day 11 a.m. cutoff for salary-transfer data involving other banks under the service described there. Other products and arrangements can have different deadlines.
For employees, the useful action is to obtain the payroll date before scheduling spending against it. For a small employer, the useful action is to work backward from the intended credit date using the contracted payroll service’s deadline.
What happens to rent and automatic bill payments?
A holiday does not give every bill the same extension: manual transfers and automatic debits must be checked separately.
Start by identifying how the bill is collected.
Rent paid by manual bank transfer
If you send rent yourself, read the contract or payment instructions to establish whether the deadline requires receipt by a certain date. A transfer receipt showing that you submitted an instruction may not establish that the landlord received the money on time.
When the deadline is close to a holiday:
- Check the transfer’s displayed execution date.
- Allow an earlier business day if immediate receipt is uncertain.
- Ask the landlord or management company how it treats a holiday deadline.
- Keep the transaction reference and confirmation after payment.
Do not infer a contractual extension from the fact that bank counters are closed.
Rent or bills collected by automatic debit
For 口座振替 — kōza furikae, meaning automatic account debit, check the biller’s stated collection date and holiday treatment.
Ask whether the debit moves to another business day, when funds must be available, and whether a failed collection is retried. Retry arrangements belong to the biller and payment service; they should not be assumed.
If salary and rent fall close together, compare the two actual dates. A salary adjustment and a debit adjustment may not move in the same direction. Keeping the required funds in place ahead of the confirmed collection date avoids relying on their order of processing.
Can you still withdraw cash, and will it cost more?
Many ATMs remain available during bank holidays, but access and charges depend on the ATM, your card issuer and the time of use.
There are three separate checks:
- Location: can you enter the shop, station or building housing the machine?
- Card service: is your bank’s card usable through that ATM at that time?
- Transaction: is the particular withdrawal, deposit or transfer function available?
Seven Bank’s English ATM FAQ says its ATMs are generally available 24 hours a day, 365 days a year, while noting that a machine inside a closed premises cannot be accessed. Its ATM transaction FAQ also explains that available transactions differ when you use another financial institution’s card.
An open convenience store therefore does not guarantee that every bank card or banking function will work.
There is no single nationwide holiday ATM fee
Fees follow the account and ATM arrangement. Some vary by time of day; some have holiday rates or free-use allowances.
As a clearly limited example, Seven Bank’s published fees for its own accounts show withdrawals at Seven Bank ATMs as:
- 7 a.m.–7 p.m.: free.
- Midnight–7 a.m. and 7 p.m.–midnight: ¥110 per withdrawal.
These amounts include consumption tax. They are not the fee schedule for every other bank’s card used in the same machine. Domestic transfer fees are separate, and an ATM withdrawal charge may also apply when making an ATM transfer.
Check your card issuer’s schedule and the machine’s fee display before confirming. A bank holiday alone is not enough information to calculate the cost.
Local differences are mainly about access
The banking holiday framework is national. What changes locally is the branch, available ATM network and the opening hours of the premises.
An ATM inside a shopping center can be inaccessible when the building closes, while a nearby machine may remain available. Before travel or a long closure, identify a second usable ATM and check both locations rather than relying only on a map pin.
How much should you rely on year-end service notices?
Use the notice for the exact holiday season you are planning; last year’s timetable is evidence of possible restrictions, not this year’s schedule.
Japan Post Bank’s notice for the 2025–26 year-end period illustrates the distinction. It announced holiday ATM availability but also listed a suspension of transfers to other financial institutions from December 31, 2025 at 11:55 p.m. until January 2, 2026 at 7 a.m. That transfer restriction applied even within otherwise available ATM or app service hours.
The practical lesson is to read the rows for the service you need. “ATMs available over New Year” is not the same as “all transfers available over New Year.”
Those dates are historical. For December 2026–January 2027, check your bank’s notice for that specific season when arranging payments. Do not copy a prior-year maintenance window into your calendar.
Useful notice headings include:
- 年末年始 — nenmatsu nenshi: year-end and New Year.
- サービス休止 — sābisu kyūshi: service suspension.
- システムメンテナンス — shisutemu mentenansu: system maintenance.
- 振込 — furikomi: bank transfer.
- 給与振込 — kyūyo furikomi: salary transfer.
What should you do if money has not arrived?
Check the transaction date and status first, then contact the party responsible for that stage of the payment.
For a domestic transfer, save the reference number, amount, submission time and displayed execution date. If the date is a future business day, the instruction may simply be waiting for that date. If it shows completion but the recipient cannot confirm receipt, ask the sending bank to explain the status and have the recipient check with their bank as needed.
Avoid sending the same payment again merely because the first one is not visible yet. Establish what happened to the first instruction before creating a possible duplicate.
For missing salary, contact payroll first to confirm the intended credit date and submission status. Your bank can investigate an account-side problem, but it cannot explain an employer’s payroll decision.
For an ATM problem during a transaction, use the machine’s help contact. Keep the receipt or note the location and time; never share your PIN or one-time password with someone offering to help.
What should you prepare before the next holiday?
Confirm the dates for your money coming in and going out before deciding how much cash or account balance you need.
A short checklist is enough:
- Salary: obtain the holiday-adjusted payday from payroll.
- Rent and bills: confirm the receipt or debit date with the recipient or biller.
- Transfers: check the execution date and the relevant maintenance notice.
- Cash: locate an accessible ATM, check your card’s hours and fees, and withdraw enough for planned cash expenses ahead of any restriction.
For the coming year-end period, December 30, 2026 is the final usual banking business day before the December 31–January 3 closure. Treat that as a planning boundary, not a universal transfer cutoff: payroll submission and other service deadlines may fall earlier. Put the confirmed dates for your own salary, rent and bank service into your calendar.
